The Book of Ruth is a 4-chapter Old Testament story set during the time of the Judges. An Israelite family from Bethlehem — Elimelech, Naomi, and their sons Mahlon and Chilion — moves to Moab during a famine. All three men die, leaving three widows. Naomi returns to Bethlehem; Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law, refuses to leave her and follows her back. In Bethlehem, Ruth gleans grain in the field of Boaz, a relative of Naomi's husband. Boaz fulfills his role as kinsman-redeemer, marries Ruth, and their son Obed becomes the grandfather of King David.

What is the Kinsman-Redeemer (Go'el) in the Book of Ruth?
A kinsman-redeemer (go'el in Hebrew) was a close male relative duty-bound under Israelite law to redeem a deceased relative's land and marry his widow to preserve the family name. In Ruth Chapter 4, Boaz goes to the city gate before ten elders and offers the first right of redemption to a closer kinsman. That man declines when he learns the duty includes marrying Ruth the Moabite, and removes his sandal to formally transfer the right to Boaz — a legal custom of the time. The unnamed closer kinsman is referred to only as "such a one" in the text.
Ruth Chapter 1 — Naomi Returns, Ruth Follows
Elimelech moves his family from Bethlehem to Moab during a famine. His sons Mahlon and Chilion marry Moabite women — Mahlon marries Ruth, Chilion marries Orpah. All three men die. Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem; Orpah returns to her people, but Ruth stays with her famous declaration (Ruth 1:16). They arrive at the start of the barley harvest. Naomi tells the women of Bethlehem to call her Mara ("bitter"). Practice Chapter 1 quiz →

He sends Ruth home at dawn with six measures of barley. Practice Chapter 3 quiz →
