The Gospel of Matthew is the opening book of the New Testament and the first of the four Gospels. Traditionally attributed to the Apostle Matthew — a tax collector whom Jesus called to follow him — it was written primarily for a Jewish-Christian audience. Its central purpose is to show that Jesus is the promised Messiah, the son of David and son of Abraham, who fulfils the prophecies of the Old Testament. Matthew repeatedly notes how events in Jesus' life happened "to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet." The Gospel moves from the genealogy and birth of Jesus, through his baptism, temptation, and great teachings, to his miracles, passion, death, and resurrection.
Who Are the Key Characters in the Gospel of Matthew?
Bible quiz questions frequently test character names, roles, and relationships. The key figures in the early chapters of Matthew include:
- Jesus — the central figure; presented as the Messiah, son of David, and Emmanuel ("God with us").
- Mary — the mother of Jesus, who conceived by the Holy Spirit.
- Joseph — the husband of Mary; a righteous man guided by angelic dreams to protect Jesus.
- John the Baptist — the forerunner who preached repentance and baptized Jesus in the Jordan.
- The Magi (wise men) — learned men from the East who followed the star and brought three gifts.
- King Herod — the ruler who feared a rival king and ordered the massacre of the infants in Bethlehem.
- The first apostles — Peter, Andrew, James, and John, called by Jesus from their fishing boats.
What is the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew?
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5–7) is the most famous teaching of Jesus and the first of five major discourses in Matthew's Gospel. It is one of the most quoted and quiz-tested sections of the entire Bible. It opens with the Beatitudes — a series of blessings beginning "Blessed are the poor in spirit" — and continues with the images of salt of the earth and light of the world. It includes the Lord's Prayer (the Our Father), teaching on prayer, fasting and giving, the warning that one cannot serve both God and money, the call not to worry, the Golden Rule ("do to others what you would have them do to you"), and the closing parable of the wise and foolish builders. Because so much memorable content is concentrated here, chapters 5–7 are the highest-yield section for Bible quiz preparation.
Matthew Chapter 1 — Genealogy and Birth of Jesus
The Gospel opens with the genealogy of Jesus, traced from Abraham through King David to Joseph, organised into three sets of fourteen generations. An angel appears to Joseph in a dream, telling him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, for the child is conceived by the Holy Spirit. The child is to be named Jesus, "for he will save his people from their sins," fulfilling the prophecy of Emmanuel — "God with us." Practice Chapter 1 quiz →
Matthew Chapter 2 — The Wise Men and the Flight to Egypt
Wise men (the Magi) from the East follow a star to Jerusalem, seeking the newborn king of the Jews. They find Jesus in Bethlehem and present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Warned in a dream, they do not return to King Herod. Herod, enraged, orders the killing of the infant boys in Bethlehem, but Joseph has already fled with Mary and Jesus to Egypt. After Herod's death, the family returns and settles in Nazareth. Practice Chapter 2 quiz →
Matthew Chapter 3 — John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus
John the Baptist preaches in the wilderness of Judea, calling people to repent "for the kingdom of heaven is near," and baptizes in the Jordan River. Jesus comes to be baptized by John. As Jesus comes up from the water, the heavens open, the Spirit of God descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven declares, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." Matthew Chapter 4 — Temptation and the First Disciples
Jesus fasts in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights and is tempted three times by the devil — to turn stones to bread, to throw himself from the temple, and to worship the devil for the kingdoms of the world. Jesus resists each with Scripture. He then begins his ministry in Galilee and calls his first disciples — Peter and Andrew, then James and John — promising to make them "fishers of men." Matthew Chapter 5 — The Beatitudes Begin the Sermon on the Mount
Jesus goes up a mountainside and begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes: "Blessed are the poor in spirit... those who mourn... the meek... those who hunger for righteousness... the merciful... the pure in heart... the peacemakers..." He calls his followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and teaches that he came not to abolish the Law but to fulfil it. Practice Chapter 5 quiz →
Matthew Chapter 6 — The Lord's Prayer
Jesus teaches that giving, prayer, and fasting should be done sincerely, not for show. He gives the model prayer, the Lord's Prayer ("Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name..."). He urges storing up treasures in heaven rather than on earth, warns that "you cannot serve both God and money," and tells his hearers not to worry but to "seek first the kingdom of God." Matthew Chapter 7 — The Golden Rule and the Wise Builder
Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount: "Do not judge, or you too will be judged"; the image of the speck and the plank; "Ask and it will be given to you"; the Golden Rule — "do to others what you would have them do to you"; the narrow and wide gates; recognising false prophets "by their fruit"; and the closing parable of the wise and foolish builders who build on rock or on sand.
